Chinese American Bear
Chinese American Bear (华裔美国熊) is a quirky, lighthearted, retro mando pop-rock duo from Seattle creating eclectic & fun Chinese/English music – one of the few bands in the US doing so. Despite their DIY efforts, they’ve been praised by Lauren Laverne of BBC Radio, featured in VOGUE+ (China), included in Spotify’s Editorial Playlists like Chill Vibes, Fresh Finds, All New Indie, Fresh Finds Indie, Indie Shuffle, Chinese Indie Picks, 組團飆歌, and 獨立最前線, along with H&M’s Official In-Store playlist, racking up over 1M plays across platforms, and are included on over 10,000 third party playlists. The duo signed with one of China’s biggest indie record labels Modern Sky in late 2021, and non-exclusive sync/licensing deals with Low Profile (NYC) & Paragon Music (Dublin).
Composed of married couple Bryce Barsten and Lingbo Anne Tong, the couple creates groovy, and “not too serious, food loving” tunes in their home studio together. They’ve been described as the wholesome child of Melody’s Echo Chamber, Dusty Springfield, Flaming Lips, and Care Bears, and have been told by Asian American fans that “we’re so glad you’re making Chinese cool, becuase it is!”. They are unabashedly themselves, writing songs about things they love like dumplings, being cute, traveling through space while eating noodles, all backed by well written and produced music. The duo writes, engineers, produces, and mixes everything by themselves, keeping the DIY spirit alive.
The duo takes pride in their quirky and energetic live show, which features live dancing dumplings, bears, and other costumed performers. The duo embarked on their first West Coast tour in November 2022, and are currently working on their second full length album.
